Average (Mean) Calculator

Type or paste a list of numbers separated by commas or spaces to get the average (mean) instantly, along with the sum, count, median, minimum and maximum.

Mean versus median

The mean is the sum of all the values divided by how many there are. It's the everyday 'average' and works well when values are fairly evenly spread.

The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. It's more representative when a few very large or very small values would otherwise drag the mean away from the typical figure — for example, average house prices or salaries.

How to enter your data

You can separate numbers with commas, spaces or new lines, and mix whole numbers, decimals and negatives freely. The calculator ignores any stray text, so pasting from a spreadsheet column usually works without cleaning up.

It recalculates as you type, so you can add or remove values and watch the average update.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate an average?

Add all the numbers together and divide by how many numbers there are. Paste your list above and the mean is shown instantly along with the median and sum.

What's the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the total divided by the count. The median is the middle value when sorted, which is less affected by outliers.
