Temperature Converter

Convert temperatures between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin by entering a value and choosing the scales.

How the scales relate

Celsius sets water's freezing point at 0° and boiling at 100°. Fahrenheit puts freezing at 32° and boiling at 212°, so each Celsius degree equals 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32; reverse it by subtracting 32 and multiplying by 5/9.

Kelvin uses the same size degree as Celsius but starts at absolute zero, the coldest possible temperature, so Kelvin equals Celsius plus 273.15.

Handy reference points

Body temperature is about 37°C or 98.6°F. A warm summer day of 30°C is 86°F, and a cold 0°C is 32°F. Knowing a few of these makes it easy to sanity-check a conversion at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 (1.8) and add 32. For example, 20°C × 1.8 + 32 = 68°F.

What is absolute zero?

Absolute zero is 0 Kelvin, equal to −273.15°C or −459.67°F — the lowest temperature physically possible.
